DAY 69
Friday June 8th
Albeseeinya, NM

I still have five days left taking whatever these drugs are to improve my recovery. Side effects include fatigue, indigestion and mood swings. So I sleep and burp my way through the day, with the occasional grumpy fit and teary spell. It seems like the side effects haven't got to me at all, really.

The morning just passes in a blur of TV sport and naps, and then we receive a call from Joel inviting us to meet his Mom. So we combine this with a visit to a store that Sal had spotted the previous day, and is keen to inspect. It's called Wild Birds Unlimited, and Sal needs to inspect the stock before deciding how big a suitcase she needs to return home.

The shop turns out to be interesting and, as well as the feeders which we are used to, also has humming bird feeders, oriole feeders and lots of other stuff. I find myself talking to the proprietor, one Ronald Greig from Louisiana. He is also an aspiring author, and we swap notes while Sal browses. She ends up buying a pair of gardening gloves!

On to Joel's house, where we meet his charming mother Jettie. Once again we are regaled with offers to stay there during our time in Albuquerque . Maybe after the weekend we will reconsider.

Back at the hotel I decide to tempt fate, and look at where my trip goes from here. On Thursday evening I should have been in San Diego, watching the Padres play the Los Angeles Dodgers. I check the scores – the Dodgers were leading 5-1 coming into the bottom of the ninth, and the home team score five to win the game. That was not a good game to miss!

The games I will have missed are all major league; Colorado, Anaheim, San Diego, Phoenix and Los Angeles. There was also a trip to Hawaii, which can probably be fitted in at the end of the summer. I might be able to fit in Colorado in July after Las Vegas, but Southern California and Arizona will have to go on the back burner, Sal and I are already talking about a trip next year to finish the project.

If all goes according to plan, we will hit the road again on June 14 th , and head for Oakland. It's just over 1,000 miles, but we have three days to do it, so it should be manageable.

I force myself to stay awake until 11.00, so that I can sleep at the right time, and just about make it.
