DAYS 60 and 61
Wednesday May 30th - Thursday May 31st
Albuquerque NM

Wednesday started with a visit to the surgeon, accompanied by Rent-a-Pal mark 2. The news, as might be expected, was both good and bad. The operation, it appears, has been a success. The negative side is that I am confined to barracks in Albuquerque for the next two weeks.

I have tablets and drops to administer, and I have been allocated a strange shaped pillow with a hole in the middle, as I am to spend the majority of the time lying flat on my face.

This has prompted some of my nearest and dearest to suggest that the book now be titled "20 Things to do in Albuquerque Lying Flat on your Face." At the moment I have not got further than two.

The rest of Wednesday was spent in the company of Lissie from Phoenix, who flew over just to keep me company for the day. We met through our parents, who are friendly back home, and I was to have stayed with her and her husband when in Phoenix. Irritatingly, this part of the trip, along with Southern California, has now been blown out of the water. If I get the all clear in two weeks, the earliest part of my schedule I might catch up with would be Oakland on June 17 th .

I am amazed by the support and sympathy I have received from you all, particularly as regards the decision to stick it out. The dye is now cast because, even if I changed my mind, I can't fly until the gas bubble dissipates from my eye. But the good wishes have been overwhelming – I even received a call from the guy who showed me around the studios last week, who had discovered my plight whilst looking at my website.

Thursday was a blur. If you lie face down a lot you tend to fall asleep a lot. The good news is that my wife Sally has managed to get a flight, and arrives Friday evening. That might increase my list to three.

I won't be writing every day while I'm recovering. There's only so much that can be written about a mattress. But rest assured you will be informed as to any significant progress.

Thanks again for your support. It literally has kept me going.
