DAY 59
Tuesday May 29th
Albuquerque NM.
This has been a much better day than day 58, even though I still could have done without it.
The day started with my opening my e-mails, still on quite an emotional low, and being incredibly lifted by the outpourings of support from all of you. Thank you all so much. The solitude of the last couple of days has been the hardest part, so having you all rooting for me has been very important to me.
So, it appears the operation has been a success. I still have a huge patch over my left eye, and need to return to outpatients in the morning to see how things are, but the surgeon seemed optimistic, so it's fingers crossed.

The day was not without amusing incident. The rules of the game were that I had to have someone with me all day, and I don't know anyone in Albuquerque. So I had to phone a carer agency and hire someone, whose name I persisted in getting wrong on the consent forms. When the nurses asked me who she was, they seemed very amused when I referred to her as "rent-a-pal".
There was only one thing in the whole process I could criticise. When I signed the consent form I was adamant that they should alter it to read "left eye", as that was the one out of which I could see nothing. Fortunately it was just a typo.
The operation itself was quite bizarre. The anaesthetic was very strong, but local, so I was conscious for the proceedings. My right eye was covered, so all I could see was through the eye on which they were operating – vague shapes poking things into my eye. If you've ever seen one of those old sci-fi films where someone has been abducted by aliens, it was not too far removed from that.
Now I'm back in the motel room which I'm learning to call home, complete with patch and a nicely developing headache. Thanks again for all your support – I couldn't have got through it without you! |
