DAY 152
Thursday August 30th
Smithfield, RI to Manchester, NH

Compared to the rest of the country, some of these north-eastern states are really small. I left Rhode Island this morning, drove through part of Massachusetts, and am now in New Hampshire; total distance, 92 miles.

The place names remain staunchly English, but not in any particular order. I left Smithfield, and drove through Chelmsford, Dorchester and Leominster to reach Manchester.

That really was today's agenda; the rest of the time was spent relaxing, messing around in the hotel, and going to dinner. I return to keep an eye on what's happening in the baseball world, as it's an important few days. A couple of days ago I wrote that there were important series in a couple of the divisions; what I didn't realise was that, in five of the six divisions, the first place team was playing the second place team.
In the American League East, the Yankees swept the Red Sox in three games, reducing the gap between them to five games. It's still probably too big a gap to close. In the AL West the Angels swept Seattle, to extend their lead to five and a half games; so they are looking a fair bet too. And the Yankees have overtaken Seattle in the wildcard.

In the National League, the effect of these series was different. In the East, Philadelphia swept the Mets in four games, thus reducing the Mets' lead to two. The Central saw the Cubs beat Milwaukee 2-1, and increase their lead to two and a half; and in the West San Diego won all three against Arizona to draw level with them. So, although there's no change, things have quickly become a lot closer.

With two months of my trip remaining, things are drawing to a conclusion. I have just seen the dates for the post season and, for the first time in years, the World Series is scheduled to run into November. My plane home is booked for October 31st, so something will have to be done. There's also Hawaii to squeeze in somehow. This really is a full time job!
