DAY 148
Sunday August 26th
Colchester, VT to Portland, ME
A nice gentle start to the morning saw us leave Colchester around 11.00 and, largely ignoring interstates, head due east across Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. The landscape was an upscale combination of Scotland and the Lake District, made even more dramatic by the light drizzle, which brought clouds to sit on top of the mountains.
Lunch was taken in the small town of St. Johnsbury, at the local diner. The diner seems to be an integral part of American culture, in much the same way as the local pub in England. On a Sunday lunchtime, the place was heaving, and I think we were the only non-locals in there.
The journey continues with a succession of lakes, mountains and rustic towns, and a surprising amount of traffic; but then it is an August weekend in a popular holiday area.
