DAY 144
Tuesday August 22nd
New York, NY to Morgantown, WV

My car was legally parked until 8.00 this morning, so an early start was in order. For Marcus and Jenny this was just another working day, so Alan and I bade our fond farewells and hit the road.

New York was always going to be congested, but the Verrazano Bridge took us from Brooklyn to Staten Island, and the Goethals Bridge took us away from New York and into New Jersey. From there we enter the green, wooded countryside of Pennsylvania, on into Maryland, and finally West Virginia.

The weather is cool, not getting out of the sixties, and a low misty cloud makes the scenery almost British. As we crest the top of the final hill that brings us to West Virginia, the sun emerges and the temperature climbs rapidly. By the time we reach our hotel it is 84 degrees and humid.
We decide to explore the town centre, and discover that Morgantown is a university town, and already quite busy. Alan fancies a look at the river and a couple of decent beers, and a local points us to the West Virginia Brewing Company, which turns out to have a balcony with a river view. The food and beer go down well, and we return to the hotel more than satisfied.

At this point in the trip the baseball season is threequarters of the way through, and the trip itself has a third to run. The run for the play-offs is starting to look interesting. Although many of the same teams that I mentioned earlier are still in pole position, no one as yet has a completely convincing lead. In the American League, Boston and Anaheim remain top of the East and West respectively, while Cleveland is now edging Detroit in the Central. Seattle is going strong, and has pushed Detroit from the wild card spot.

The National League still has the Mets topping the East, but elsewhere there has been some change. The Cubs lead the Central, neck and neck with Milwaukee, and the Arizona Diamondbacks have gone to the top of the West, leaving San Diego in the wild card spot. But there are still forty games left.

As far as the trip is concerned, I have five major league parks left, and twelve states. The questions to be played with are how do I fit in Hawaii , when do I go to Cooperstown, and possibly Nashville, and what will I be doing during the play offs.
