DAY 127
Sunday August 5th
Cincinnati OH

I awaken to the gentle sound of raindrops on my bedroom skylight, politely listening for my hosts to be up and around. Hearing no sound, I lie in bed writing, until nature eventually insists that I get up. At this point, I smell coffee, and go downstairs to say good morning before showering.

I find Judy sitting on the porch. The brief shower has not been enough to relieve the intense humidity, but I decide to join her for a cup of coffee before showering. We start to chat, and one cup turns to two or more before Steve arrives for breakfast.

At this point I decide I should shower and dress but, finding the shower occupied, return downstairs for more coffee, realising in the dim depths of my mind that this, a lazy Sunday morning, is exactly what I need. At this point, I am introduced to the appallingly attractive family tradition of Baileys in Sunday morning coffee.
By the time I shower and we eat breakfast it's technically early afternoon; brother Mike arrives for breakfast, followed by Liz; a friend of Mike's comes to collect him, and the afternoon gently fritters away.

Around three Steve leaves for Pittsburgh, Liz returns to her mother, Bruce goes off to do something or other, and Judy drives me into the city to see her workplace, the WCPO Channel 9 TV studio. I am given a tour by Judy's boss Bob, whom I met last night. I see all the exciting computerised gizmos, and am introduced to the head of sport, who intends to interview me at the Reds game on Tuesday. We agree that I should contact Channel 5 and let them know this is happening, in case they want to pick it up.

Next stop is the condo of sister Gail and her husband Tim, with whom I will be staying for the next two nights. Family rivalries, apparently, dictate that I should be divided equally between the households of Steve's favourite sister and Steve's other favourite sister. I'm not sure which is which.

We pay a brief visit to a festival in Mount Adams, a hilltop area with fabulous views of the city. These guys seem to know most of Cincinnati, and I am introduced to a steady stream of people.

There are time constraints, however, as I have to be back at base by 7.00 for my second interview with Channel 5. This seems to pass even more quickly than the previous week, although the first reports from home are that it was OK.

The day is rounded off with a visit to an "English pub" where I eat shepherds pie, and drink Fuller's ESB and Young's Double Chocolate Stout. The former is made with chives and mozzarella, and the latter are, of course, pasteurised and served under pressure. But they are nonetheless all palatable. Even gas can't kill the flavour of Double Chocolate Stout.
